She has consistently noted that her primary role is that of a mother, not a policy maker. I'll admit that I was hoping for a more aggressive first lady, especially with Michelle Obama's credentials and policy agenda that places working families as a top priority, I am not willing to judge her so quickly. A <a href="http://www.freep.com/article/20090201/NEWS15/90131048">recent article</a> highlights the credentials of her staff:<br /><br /><blockquote>Policy director Jocelyn Frye was the general counsel and director of the workplace fairness program at the National Partnership for Women and Families. Frye was involved in developing the Ledbetter legislation.<br /><br />Deputy chief of staff David Medina was the political director for former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards’ presidential campaign and worked for the AFL-CIO and the U.S. Global Leadership Campaign. The Office of Juvenile Affairs piloted a flexible schedule and found that staff turnover decreased. Women often make less than men, regardless of rank and position. Of course, we should not be surprised given the pay disparity that exists in most jobs.<br /><br />Today, a step was taken in the right direction. Obama signed the Lilly Ledbetter Act. The <a href="http://www.nwlc.org/fairpay/pendinglegislation.html#ledbetter">National Women's Law Center</a> explains the details of the act:<br /><br /><blockquote>In <em>Ledbetter</em>, the Supreme Court held that employees cannot challenge ongoing compensation discrimination if the employer's original discriminatory decision occurred more than 180 days before, even when the employee continues to receive paychecks that have been discriminatorily reduced. Because pay information is often confidential, it may take a long time for an employee to realize that she is experiencing compensation discrimination. And if employers are insulated from liability after 180 days, they have little incentive to correct pay discrimination that occurs. The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act would restore long-standing law and promote voluntary compliance with anti-discrimination laws by employers. Most of the time you can point to where you acquired that illness, such as the coworker who insisted on coming to work despite the fact that he/she is sneezing and coughing all over the office. Oh, the contaminated air!! I have not been around anyone with an illness and I don't really interact with many people at work -- such is the life of an academic. Nevertheless, I am responsible for giving Mack a cold which manifested this past Friday.<br /><br />For days, her nose went drip, drip, drip and now she goes cough, cough, cough. As parents, we don't have many options to deal with the symptoms. Cold medicine is ineffective and often just keeps babies from sleeping. We can use a humidified or vapor rub, but ever those have no scientific proof.<br /><br />We just have to make them comfortable and hope for a swift recovery. Both men and women have these attitudes although they are more pronounced in women.</blockquote><br /><br />There is a tension here between reality and desire. I realize that the current reality of higher education is such that obtaining tenure and having a family at a research university is difficult, if not impossible in some cases. Yet, I don't want to discourage my doctoral students from considering research universities. I desire for them to have access to research universities and to have the option of raising a family without committing career suicide. How do we move from desire to a new reality? I know that efforts toward making all universities more family-friendly is essential and must include marketing efforts to show graduate students that they can be an academic parent and get tenure at a research university. The NY Times has picked up this topic again in <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/04/jobs/04babies.html?_r=2">an article</a> that describes how a few companies are allowing for children to be cared for in the workplace. The author notes:<br /><br /><blockquote>More companies are allowing women — and some men, too — to bring their babies to work. The advantages are clear: The women don’t lose money by taking maternity leave. They can breastfeed conveniently. And they can bond with the baby rather than worry that he or she will develop a closer connection with a nanny or a day-care provider.</blockquote><br /><br />I have been thinking a lot about work-life balance culture in the academy lately as I craft a grant proposal on the subject. I keep asking myself what a work-life balance culture in the academy looks like and how does it get established? Are we too far from a collective sense of responsibility, an academic community, to consider bringing kids to work? My little adorable daughter has decided that crawling just isn't for her. Maybe she doesn't want to get dirty. Maybe she is content with the toys in front of her, not the balls/fake TV remotes/dolls/musical toys/etc across the room. Maybe should would rather watch the other babies struggle to wiggle across the room. At almost 10 months old, her lack of interest in moving off her tush bothers me since I want her to explore the world. To go where no baby has gone before.........<br /><br />What do I do? The amendments are primarily to provide additional benefits for those families who have a member in the Armed Forces. The first amendment provides for unpaid leave of up to 26 weeks for a:<br /><br /><blockquote>spouse, son, daughter, parent, or next of kin” to care for a “member of the Armed Forces, including a member of the National Guard or Reserves, who is undergoing medical treatment, recuperation, or therapy, is otherwise in outpatient status, or is otherwise on the temporary disability retired list, for a serious injury or illness.</blockquote><br /><br />The second amendment provides that employees may take FMLA leave for:<br /><br /><blockquote>“any qualifying exigency” arising out of the fact that the spouse, or a son, daughter, or parent of the employee is on active duty (or has been notified of an impending call or order to active duty) in the Armed Forces in support of a contingency operation.</blockquote><br /><br />Qualified exigency, as clarified in the changes includes: short-notice deployment, military events and related activities, childcare and school activities, financial and legal arrangements, counseling, rest and recuperation, post-deployment activities, and additional activities that arise out of the covered military member's active duty.<br /><br />While I am 100% supportive of new policies that support military families (many of my extended relatives were in the military at some point), I can't help but wonder why other amendments have gone unnoticed and unsupported. For example, 12 weeks of unpaid leave does not assist with all the additional costs associated with a new baby, (i.e., car seats and medical bills). Nor does FMLA take into account the developmental needs of a child. Children in department and toy stores sing in the aisles, "I want that. Can't I have another toy? Mom, all my friends have this toy." From tweens who buy Hannah Montana products to the commercials during Saturday morning cartoons, celebrating the latest action figure or video game or sexualized doll, our children have become a target for advertisers. Take, for example, these stats:<br /><ol><li>Children are a captive audience: The average American child watches an estimate between 25,000 to 40,000 television commercials per year. In the UK, it is about 10,000</li><li>$15-17 billion is spent by companies advertising to children in the US</li><li>The marketing seems to be worth it. For example, <ul><li>Teens in the US spend around $160 billion a year</li><li>Children (up to 11) spend around $18 billion a year</li><li>“Tweens” (8-12 year olds) “heavily influence” more than $30 billion in other spending by parents, and “80 percent of all global brands now deploy a ‘tween strategy.’”</li><li>Children (under 12) and teens influence parental purchases totaling over $130-670 billion a year.</li></ul> </li></ol><br /><br />What I fear most as a new parent with a young child are the lessons that we as a society are teaching children. Christmas has become about what we receive and not what we give. A few years ago, my fear was realized when my niece began counting the presents under the Xmas tree only to discover that her cousin had more presents. Where are the lessons about giving, sharing, family, etc.? Just think back to the image of a pump shield rolling down the middle of a carpeted office floor seeming to reach with invisible hands for the foot of my male department chair. Ugh, my face just blushes thinking about it! Because I tired of carrying the pump and the extra 15 pounds that still has a tight grasp on my body frame and because I don't want to carry the pump across country again, I decided to start the weaning process. The process has gone very well with limited pain. Every three to four days, I skip one of the pumping sessions.<br /><br />BUT<br /><br />I realized today that I am just feeling "off" and that I have had this feeling for about 10 days. My moods are morose and somewhat unpredictable and I can't seem to focus on all my student papers, not to mention that articles that I promised I would finish before break. When the reason hit me, I started to google, confirming my suspicions -- weaning causes hormonal changes. Dang it!!!
